Norwegian Surveillance System for Communicable Diseases

Description

The Norwegian Surveillance System for Communicable Diseases, MSIS, is a statutory health register according to the Health Register Act § 11. MSIS contributes to the surveillance of infectious diseases in Norway through continous collection, analysis and reporting of the prevalence of infectious diseases. MSIS contains data from 1977. The Norwegian Institute of Public Health is data controller and responsible for collecting and processing data in MSIS.

Description:

The data collection Diagnosespesifikk informasjon includes variables that only are relevant and in use for some diagnoses:

  • To find out which diagnoses the variable is relevant for, click the arrow next to the variable name to expand, and look under Beskrivelse.
  • You can also use the free text search to look for relevant variables using the diagnosis number (cf. coded values for the variable Diagnose).

Description:

It's mandatory to select diagnoses before you select other variables:

  • Log in to save the variable Diagnose to your variable list. Then go to the variable list and specify the diagnoses (ie. code values) that you would like to apply for.
  • For collective diagnoses (703 Virale infeksjoner i sentralnervesystemet, 805 Resistent gram-negativ stav) you must also specify pathogen. You can do this using the variable Smittestoff found under Generell informasjon.

Description:

The data collection Generell informasjon includes variables that are relevant to all or most diagnoses. Some variables are not in use for tuberculosis or for diagnoses that earlier were not notifiable with full personal identification, ie. diseases that historically were categorized as group B or C in the MSIS regulation.
